Chapter 4 Flashcards
What is archimedes principle?
The upthrust on an object in a fluid is equal to the weight of the fluid it displaces.
What is centre of gravity?
An imaginary point in which the entire weight of the object acts through.
What is centre of mass?
A point in which through any externally applied force produces a straight line motion but no rotation
What is a couple?
A pair of equal and opposite forces acting on a body but no straight line.
What is density?
The mass per unit volume of a substance
What is equilibrium?
A body is in equilibrium when the net force and net moment acting on it are zero.
What is force?
A push or pull on an object.
What is mass?
Amount of matter.
What is moment?
The product of force and perpendicular distance from pivot or stated point.
What is pivot?
A point in which a body can rotate.
What is the principle of moment?
For a body in rotational equilibrium the sum of the anticlockwise moments about a point are equal to the sum of the clokcwise moments about the same point,
What is tension?
The pulling force exerted by a cable, string or chain on an object.
What is terminal velocity?
The constant speed reached by an object when the drag force is equal to and opposite to the weight of the object.
What is torque?
The product of one of the forces of a couple and the perpendicular distance between the forces.
What is weight?
The gravitational force on an object.
