Ethics
Is one’s moral conduct an interpretation regarding right or wrong
Two questions of ethics
What should I do? Why should I do it?
Sources of ethics
Basic instincts—— you’re right from wrong
Parents—— how would you feel if someone did that to you
Teachers —— Study hard and don’t cheat
Religion—— do onto others as you would have them do onto you
Observation of others behavior
What are the six basic principles of ethics?
Autonomy-A person’s freedom to think, judge, and act independently without influence.
Non-maleficence —— Hippocrates do no harm
Beneficence- idea that actions are ethical as long as they’ve benefit a person or community
Justice-treating people fairly and giving people what they deserve and are entitled to receive
Veracity——-telling the truth to the patient
Confidentiality—Patients have the right to privacy on their healthcare information
Privacy— Health insurance portability and accountability act requiring patient health information be confidential
Professional code of ethics
Demonstrate standard care that the public expects, enhance ethical consciousness and responsibility of healthcare professionals, and establish a standard judgment and conduct for professional
What are the steps for solving ethical dilemmas?
Identify alternatives, determine the professional implication of should you do it, rank the alternatives, and choose a course of action.
If violations of ethical conduct have occurred you must answer the following question:
Do you want to remain at your job under these circumstances?
Should you discuss the situation with your employer?
Should you seek other employment?
If you remain will it affect you in the future and you’re dealing with other employers?
What options do you have?
