Chapter 3B Flashcards
Carl Sagan, Dragons of Eden, 72-73
Frontal Lobe
•deliberation
•regulation of action
•sites of anticipation*/plan
Implicated in the connection of 1) Erect Bipedal Posture* 2) Vision *cognitive/motor *Bipedal Posture free hands for manipulation
Carl Sagan, Dragons of Eden, 72
Neocortex neocortical subdivisions's neural connections not limited to neocortex (subcortical as well) *functions are shared/redundant throughout other lobes
Carl Sagan, Dragons of Eden, 72-73b
Parietal Lobe
•spatial perception
•exchange of info between
brain and rest of body
•a lesion in the parietal lobe causes the greatest decline in intelligence as measured by activities in everyday life
Carl Sagan, Dragons of Eden,72-73c
Temporal Lobe (beneath the temple) •auditory impressions(upper part) •connect auditory with visual stimuli*
*Lesions in TL can result in 1)Aphasia-a striking separation of function (being able to write but not read, vice versa) 2) impairment in the perception of faces (Including family )
Carl Sagan, Dragons of Eden, 72-73d
Lesions in Left TL- characteristic loss of memory for language
Lesions in Right TL-produces amnesia for certain types of nonverbal material
Carl Sagan, Dragons of Eden, 77
Chief among the neocortical abstractions are the Symbolic Languages particularly
1) reading
2) writing
3) mathematics
- -which require operative activities from all lobes.
Carl Sagan, Dragons of Eden, 79(sub notes)
There has been some speculation that immersion in hyperbaric oxygen–that is, oxygen under high pressure–can raise the intelligence of infants
Carl Sagan, unknown,
2 billion years ago, our ancestors were microbes; a half-billion years ago, fish; a 100 million years ago, something like mice; 10 million years ago, arboreal apes; and 1 million years ago, proto-humans puzzling out the taming the fire. Our evolutionary lineage is marked by mastery of change. In our time, the pace is quickening
