Chapter 35 Flashcards
When should you remove your SCBA
TBA
What is an IDLH
An atmosphere that poses an immediate threat to life or cause irreversible adverse health effects. Requires an SCBA to work in or immediate withdrawal
What is a STEL?
Short-term exposure limits, no more than 15 mins 4 times a day.
What is a REL?
Recommended Exposure Limits, Limited to 10 hours
What is the gold standard for respiratory protection?
Wearing an SCBA
Is knowing a single gas is below the REL mean the environment is safe?
No, A single gas reading does not let you know if the environment is safe
How does an electrochemical sensor work?
Filled with a chemical reagent that reacts with the target chemical and provides a reading
What chemicals can an electrochemical sensor read?
Ammonia Oxygen CO Chlorine Hydrogen Cyanide Hydrogen Sulfide
What important factors does a firefighter need to understand about Electrochemical Sensors?
Reacts to other gasses
Easily overwhelmed and will max out
Fail to 0 point (does not detect very very small amounts
Must ensure calibration before use
Reaction time (20-200 seconds)
What is the reaction time of a electrochemical sensor?
20 - 200 seconds
How does a photoionization sensor work?
Uses ultraviolet light to ionization gases that move through the sensor
What does photoionization sensor primarily detect?
Organic materials such as Benzene, acetone, ethanol, butane
What inorganic materials does a photoionization sensor detect?
Ammonia
What is a common issue with photoionization sensors?
That detect but do not identify.
Must be kept clean
What can’t a photoionization sensor detect?
CO OR HCN and natural gasses
