Chapter 34- Plants Form and Function Flashcards
Leaves
Primary site of photosynthesis
Conifer Leaves
Gymnosperms
Monocot Leaves
Angiosperms, have flowers, parallel leaves
Eudicot Leaves (Dicots)
Branched leaves (one main branch and branches)
Leaflet
small leaves on one main branch, Main branch with leaflets is whole leaf
Stems
structural support, position leaves so exposed to sunlight, conduct food, water, and nutrients
Different kinds of stems
potato, daffodil, asparagus, cactus
Roots
absorb water and minerals from the soil, anchor the plant in place
Environmental Stressors
Wind, Aridity, Temperature, and Heterogeneity of resources
Leaves in Humid
Large, dark areas, maximize light capture, do not worry about water loss
Leaves in Dry
smaller, thicker to minimize water loss, do not worry about photosynthesis
Drought deciduousness
Leaves might be dropped (lose all surface area) in places with intermittent drought
Trichomes
hairs on surface of leaf, can change color of leaf, add layer
Waxy Cuticle
wax covering found in dry areas, reduces water loss
Salt excretion
some plants can take up and excrete salt (albedo)
