Chapter 34-Diagnostic Liver Function Tests Flashcards
Substance found in the heart, liver, and skeletal muscle.
-can also be be used to indicate liver injury
AST
This is a protein produced in the liver
Albumin
Found in the tissues of the liver, bone, intestine, kidney, and placenta.
-Used as an index of liver and bone disease when correlated with other clinical findings.
Alkaline phosphatase
The liver converts _____________, a by-product of protein metabolism, into urea, which is excreted by the kidneys.
Ammonia
Results from the breakdown of hemoglobin in the red blood cells; removed from the body by the liver, which excretes into the bile.
Bilirubin
Found primarily in the liver, kidney, prostate and spleen. Is more specific for the hepatobilliary system.
GGT (gamma-glutamyl transferase)
A protein produced by the liver for clotting of the blood.
Prothrombin
This test is a marker of hepatic injury; more specific of liver damage than AST
