Chapter 34 Flashcards
alternating current (AC)
electrons in the circuit move first in one direction and then in the opposite direction; alternating back and forth about relatively fixed positions
ampere
- si unit for electric current
- the flow of 1 coulomb of charge per second
diode
a tiny electronic device that acts as a one-way valve to allow electron flow in only one direction
direct current (DC)
a flow of charge that always flows in one direction
drift speed
the average distance traveled by a charge carrier per unit of time
electric current
- the flow of electric charge
- measured in ampere
electric power
the rate at which electrical energy is converted into another form such as mechanical energy, heat, or light
watt = ampere x volt
electric resistance
the resistance of a material to the flow of electric current through it
- measured in ohms
R = V/I
Electric shock
a sudden discharge of electricity through a part of the body
electrolysis
- the passage of a direct electric current through an ionic substance
- separation of materials
electromotive
a difference in potential that tens to give rise to an electric current
net speed
(insert)
Ohm
- the si unit of electric resistance
- one ohm is the resistance of a device that draws a current of one ampere when a voltage of one volt is impress across it
Ohm’s law
the statement that the current in a circuit is directly proportional to the voltage impressed across the circuit & is inversely proportional to the resistance
Current = Voltage / Rsistance
Potential difference
difference in potential voltage between the ends of a conductors
