Franklin Delano Roosevelt
He was the fifth cousin to Theodore Roosevelt and came from a wealthy family. He studied at Harvard and served as Sec. of the Navy. He was savvy conciliatory and handicapped. He was elected as Democratic president in 1932 and elected four times the only one to do so and came up with the new deal
Eleanor Roosevelt
She was wife of Franklin Roosevelt and traveled everywhere with him on behalf of all of his campaigns. As a result she became the most active First Lady in history she fought for the rights of all Americans.
Harry Hopkins
He was a friend and adviser to Pres. FDR. He was the head of the federal emergency relief administration FERA. It was also very involved in reforms in the Great Depression in the 1930s and 40s in issues such as unemployment and mortgages
Frances Perkins
She was the first woman appointed to a cabinet position and appointed by FDR. She later became secretary of labor and received a lot undeserved criticism from male politicians and businessmen
Father Coughlin
He was an anti-new deal Catholic priest and began broadcasting in 1930. He was nicknamed the microphone Messiah. his slogan was social justice. he was silenced in 1942 when his broadcast became too radical
Huey Long
He was nicknamed KingFish and was Sen. of Louisiana. He pushed his share our wealth program which would make every man a king. Long plan to run against FDR in the 1936 elections but he was assassinated.
Mary McLeod Bethune
She was an American educator and civil rights leader best known for starting a school for African American students in Daytona Beach Florida that eventually became Bethune Cookman University and for being an adviser to Pres. Franklin Delano Roosevelt
Harold Ickes
He was nicknamed honest Harold and was secretary of the interior. He later became head of the Public Works administration and dealt with industrial recovery and unemployment relief by creating jobs ( over 34,000 project jobs for workers). His determination to prevent waste prevented maximum relief.
George W Norris
He was a senator from Nebraska who’s steadfast vision and zeal helped an act creating the Tennessee Valley Authority to be passed in 1933.
John L Lewis
He was the leader of the United mine workers and he also formed the CIO committee for industrial organization. He led a sitdown strike on general motors at Flint Michigan in 1936. Unionists from the Republic Steel Co wanted to join the CIO and a fight broke out in 1937.
Alfred M Landon
He was the Republican candidate in the 1936 presidential election. This honest wealth man from Kansas lost greatly to the Democratic FDR. He stressed balancing the budget.
Boondoggling
A term used during a great depression to describe a wasteful project carried out by the WPA
Parity
It was a plan to help farmers injured from low prices and overproduction. From 1909 to 1914 farms enjoyed a period of prosperity. Parity was the price placed on the product that gave it the same value in buying power that It had from 1909-1914. That AAA paid farmers to reduce production. The payment for this came from taxes gotten from the makers of expensive farm equipment.
