Chapter 33 Flashcards
Compression
Two tectonic plates collide , massive blocks of rock are squeezed together
Stresses
The movement of Earth’s tectonic plates hat produces many of its surface features
Tension
Masses of rock pulling away from one another
Deform
Where a rock is warmer and can bend and flow more easily
Elastically
If the rock deforms , it returns to its initial shape when the stress is removed
Plastic deformation
If the force on the Rock is greater and exceeds the rocks strength , the rock will not deform but it will break
Folds
Bends in rock layers
Anticlines
The arches
Synclines
The troughs
Fault
A break in a rock , both sides have moved relative to one another
Normal faults
Indicates that rock has undergone tension . The plates are pulling away from each other
Reversed faults
When there is compression rocks are being squeezed
Hanging wall
The side of the fault where they could hang their lantern .
Footwall
The side of the fault where they could stand
Strike - slip faults
Opposing forces causes plates to move horizontally
