Diphenydramine
Max of 400 mg day
Acts within 15 to 60 minutes lasts up to 4 to 6 h
Diphenydramine Works by
Occupying the same receptor sites as histamine which prevents histamine from acting on target tissues.
• Drugs are effective in inhibiting vascular permeability, edema formation, bronchoconstriction, pruritis
Uses
Diphenydramine Uses
Hypersensitivity reactions (Allergic rhinits, conjuctivitis, dermatitis)
• Motion sickness
• Insomnia
• Parkinsonism
Diphenydramine Assess for:
CNS depression (Drowsiness, sedation) • CNS stimulation (Anxiety, agitation) • Anticholinergic effects (Dry mouth, urinary retention, constipation, blurred vision)

Contraindications
Pregnancy
• Narrow angle glaucoma
• Prostatic hypertrophy
• Bladder neck obstruction
Fexofenadine
Peak action 2.5 hrs lasting 12- 24 h
max dose 180 mg
Fexofenadine Works by
Competiting with histamine for binding sites preventing the activation of cells by histamine. Thus preventing allergy symptoms from occuring. Bc the drug does not cross the blood brain barrier it does not cause drowsiness.
Fexofenadine Use
Seasonal allergic Rhinitis
• Uritcaria
Fexofenadine Assess for
Headache
• Nausea
• Vomiting
• Dysmenorrhea • Fatigue
Only with water (Fruit juice may decrease absorption
Shake oral suspensions completely before administration
