Chapter 3.2 Flashcards
1
Q
What are isolated systems? What is the internal energy in this system?
A
- not capable of exchanging energy or matter with their surroundings
- > as a result the internal energy is zero
2
Q
What are closed systems? Give an example
A
- capable of exchanging energy but not matter with their surroundings
- classic experiment involves gases in vessels with movable pistons
3
Q
What are open systems
A
- can exchange both matter and energy with their environment
- >energy is transferred in the form of heat or work
4
Q
What are state functions? Give examples
A
- thermodynamic properties
- > defined by the fact that they are independent of the path taken to get to a particular equilibrium state
-state functions include: pressure, density, temperature, volume, enthalpy, internal energy, gibbs free energy and entropy
5
Q
What are process functions? Give examples
A
- they describe the path taken to get to from one state to another
- > eg; work and heat
