Chapter 31 Flashcards
What are the 3 components of the pharynx?
- Nasal Pharynx
- Oral Pharynx
- Laryngeal Pharynx
What is the Nasal Pharynx?
Posterior end of the nasal cavity
What is the Oral Pharynx?
Back throat wall
What is the Laryngeal Pharynx?
Below tongue where digestive/respiratory systems branch
What are the Muscles of the soft palate?
- Palatoglossal
- Palatopharyngeal
- Muscle of Uvula
- Lavator Veli Palatini
- Tensor Veli Palatini
What does the Palatoglossal muscle do?
- Contraction pulls the sides of the tongue up and back, pulls soft palate down, and narrows space between R/L Faucial Pillars.
-Vertical folds of tissue in front and back of tonsil: Palatoglossal folds
Palatopharyngeal folds
What does the Palatopharyngeal muscle do?
Contraction elevates pharynx
What do the muscles of Uvula do?
Contraction shortens- broadens Uvula
What do the levator Veli Palatini do?
Elevated posterior end of the soft palate
What do the tensor Veli Palatini do?
Opens the auditory tube when closed.
What are the muscles of the Pharynx that Constrict?
- Superior Pharyngeal Constrictor
- Middle Pharyngeal Constrictor
- Inferior Pharyngeal Constrictor
What are the 2 types of Pharynx muscles?
Constrictors and elevators/dilators
What does the Superior Pharyngeal Constrictor do?
Contraction constricts upper pharynx and forces food or contents down pharynx.
What does the Middle Pharyngeal Constrictor do?
Contraction constricts Pharyngeal opening and forces food toward esophagus.
What do the Inferior Pharyngeal Constrictor do?
Contraction continues to force food down to esophagus and onto the stomach.
