Chapter 31 Flashcards
Pharmacokinetics
Study of how drugs enter the body, reach their site of action, are metabolized, and exit from the body
What are the three names of drugs?
Chemical, generic, trade
Chemical Drug name
Provides the exact description of medication’s composition
Generic drug name
The manufacturer who first develops the drug assigns the name
Trade
Also known as brand or proprietary name. The name under which a manufacturer markets the medication.
Lasix
Diuretic that depletes potassium
Pharmacokinetics (ADME)
Absorption, Distribution, Metabolization, Excretion
Factors that influence absorption
Route of administration, ability to dissolve, blood flow to site of administration, body surface area, lipid solubility of medication
Distribution depends on
Physical and chemical properties of the medication, physiology of person taking it
Biotransformation
Occurs under the influence of enzymes that detoxify, break down, and remove active chemicals
Types of medication action
Therapeutic effect, adverse effect, idiosyncratic reaction, side effect, toxic effect, allergic reaction
Therapeutic affect
Expected or predicted physiological response
Adverse effect
Unintended, undesirable, often predictable
Toxic effect
Accumulation of medication in the bloodstream
Idiosyncratic reaction
Overreaction or under-reaction or different reaction from normal
Allergic reaction
Unpredictable response to a medication
Epi pen
Epinephrin pen used for anaphylactic shock
Synergistic effect
Occurs when the combined effects of two medications is greater than the effect of the medications given separately
