Stages of grief

Denial
- Shielding from overwhelming emotion
- Usually brief, disbelief/shock
- Buffer after receiving shocking news and it allows the person to regroup
- Result can be: “doctor shopping” in hopes that their diagnoses will be a mistake
- Ex: “No this can’t be true. That’s impossible.”
Anger
- Toward health care system God, even the deceased

Bargaining
- Attempt to regain control because the person feels vulnerable/helpless
- “If only I had gone to the doctor sooner OR I’ll stop smoking if I can make it to Joey’s graduation”
Depression
- Guilty because of the strain they’re placing on their family
- Deep sadness for things they will miss out on
- Preparatory vs reactive
Acceptance
- Calm, if somewhat withdrawn, response

Anosognosia
Inability to recognize one’s illness due to the illness itself
Correctional nursing
- Care of incarcerated patients
- Focused on treating mental illness
- Work to facilitate ongoing care for people living with chronic mental illness including advocating for alternatives to incarceration
Roles of a correctional nurse
Roles include completing comprehensive mental state examinations and implementing psychiatric care plans and addressing alcohol and or substance use
Psychiatric forensic nursing
Combines the skills of medical and psychiatric nursing with an understanding of the criminal justice system
Roles of psychiatric forensic nursing
- Evidence collection which helps determine the degree of the crime
- Role is to provide assessment data that can help make final diagnosis within the multidisciplinary forensic team
- May function as a psychotherapist, forensic nurse examiner, competency evaluator, fact or expert witness, consultant to law enforcement agencies or criminal justice system, hostage negotiator, or criminal profiler
Ageism and public policy
It’s hard to find financial and political support for programs that are geared toward older adults

older adults typically are excluded from clinical trials for medication due to polypharmacy or having a chronic illness
