Chapter 3 -Waves: Superposition And Interference Flashcards
1
Q
What is superposition?
A
When two or more waves cross, the resultant displacement equals the vector sum of the individual displacements.
2
Q
What is constructive interference?
A
The displacements combine to give a bigger displacement. This happens if the displacements are in the same direction.
3
Q
What is destructive interference?
A
One wave with a positive displacement meets a wave with a negative displacement, the displacements will cancel out.
4
Q
What is total destructive interference?
A
If two waves of equal and opposite displacements meet, they cancel each other out completely.
5
Q
What does it mean when 2 points on a wave are in phase?
A
Both in the same point of the wave cycle.
