Chapter 3 - Voltage-Dependent Membrane Permeability Flashcards
Membrane Conductance
The reciprocal of membrane resistance.
Voltage Clamp Method
A technique used to influence the membrane while also measuring the membrane potential.
Refractory Period
Following an action potential, a brief period of time in which an axon cannot undergo further excitation.
Conduction Velocity
The measurable rate of transmission in an axon.
Myelination
The insulation of the axonal membrane. Ogliodendrocytes are responsible for myelination in the CNS, and Schwann cells are responsible for myelination in the PNS.
Myelin
Multiple layers of closely opposed glial membranes.
Nose of Ranvier
A gap in the myelin wrapping where ions can flow into and out of the axon.
Saltatory
The propagation of action potential from node to node as a result of myelination.
