Chapter 3 vocabulary Flashcards
adipose tissue
Body fat; tissue that stores energy and protects the organs from injury
appendicular skeleton
The region of the skeletal system that is composed of the bones of the upper and lower limbs, the shoulders and hips.
axial skeleton
The region of the skeletal systems that is composed of the cranium, the vertebrae of the neck and backbone the sternum and the ribs. The exoskeleton provide support and protection for the body.
axon
The part of a neuron that extends from the cell body and relays nerve impulses to other neurons
connective tissue
Tissue that finds and supports body parts
dendrites
Fibers that branch out from the cell body of a neuron to receive electrochemical impulses from other neurons, and conduct them toward the cell body
digestion
Process of mechanically and chemically breaking down food to enable absorption of nutrients.
epithelial tissue
Tissue that covers body surfaces and lines, body cavities
homeostasis
A process through which organisms drive to maintain a stable internal state, despite constantly changing conditions.
matrix
the extracellular, nonliving fluid surrounding calls. In a mitochondria: the fluid in the inner space.
muscle tissue
Tissue that moves, the body and its parts
myelin
White fatty substance that insulate the Accion of neurons, allowing nerve impulses to move very fast
nervous tissue
Tissue that receives stimuli and conducts nerve impulses
neuron
Especially so three parts that transfer of nerve impulses to the brain
organ system
A group of organs that work together to accomplish essential bodily functions
