Chapter 3 Vocabulary Flashcards
Coordinate Plane/Grid
Two number lines (one horizontal and one vertical) that meet at 0. There are four quadrants.

Coordinate/Ordered Pair
A point on a coordinate plane. (x,y)
Quadrant
One of the four regions on a coordinate plane.
They are named using roman numerals (I, II, III, IV)
Y-intercept
What is y when x=0?
X-intercept
What is x when y=0?
Linear Equation
And equation that graphs as a straight line (infinite in both directions)
Standard Form (Linear Equations)
Formula
Ax+By=C
Example: 10x+5y=200
Slope
How much does y increase/decrease each time x increases by 1
“Rise over Run” is how you write it as a fraction
Slope-Intercept Form
Formula
y=mx+b
y=2x-6
Example: y=4x+8
m=slope, b=y-intercept
Translation
Transformations
add or subtract from x
sliding it left (addition) or right (subtraction)
parent function (the most basic) is y=x [or f(x)=x]
Dialation
Transformations
multiply x by a number (other than 0 or 1)
makes it flatter or steeper
flatter if absolute value of multiplier is >0 and <1, steeper if >1
parent function (the most basic) is y=x [or f(x)=x]
Reflection
Transformations
x has a negative sign
y=-x
mirror image
parent function (the most basic) is y=x [or f(x)=x]
Arithmetic Sequence
Formula
An=A1+(n-1)d
n=Which term in sequence
d=Common dfference
Example: 371=A1+(23-1)17
A=First term of sequence, N=Which term in sequence, D=Common difference
What makes a function a function?
For every x, there is exactly one y
If you can draw a vertical line and hit moe than one point on the coordinate plane, it is not a function
Domain
All possible x-values
