Chapter 3 Vocab Flashcards
Secondary succession
The regrowth of an ecosystem on an area that has been burned or destroyed in someway. Example: fires in Yellowstone are now causing regrowth of trees
Limiting factor
Antibiotic or abiotic factor that restricts the existence, numbers, reproduction, or distribution of organisms
Pioneer species
The first organisms that are able to grow in pure water and bear rock.
EX: Lichens ( algae and a fungus) , algae, moss. Only happens were no other organisms have been before (no soil)
Climax community
A stable mature community that undergoes little or no change in species
Photic zone
The portion of the marine bio that shallow enough for sunlight to penetrate
Aphotic zone
Deeper water that never receive sunlight
Plankton
Most of the organisms that live in the marine biome
Estuary
A coastal body of water, partially surrounded by land, and which freshwater and saltwater mix
Permafrost
Underneath the top layer is a layer of permanently frozen ground
Range of tolerance
The entire set of conditions, such as air temperature or soil moisture, under which an organism is potentially able to survive. Levels outside of this range
Primary succession
The colonization of bear land by Organisms – no soil
