Chapter 3 Vocab Flashcards
Ecology
The study of organisms in the biosphere and and how the interact with each other, their surroundings, and their environment.
Autotrophs
Organism that is able to capture energy from sunlight or chemicals and use it to produce its own inorganic compounds. Also called a producer.
Photosynthesis
“captures light energy and uses it to power chemical reactions that convert carbon dioxide and water into oxygen and energy-rich carbohydrates such as sugars and starches. This process adds oxygen to the atmosphere and removes carbon dioxide.”
Chemosynthesis
Chemical energy is used to carry out carbohydrates.
Heterotrophs or consumer
Acquire energy from the environment and other organisms
Carnivores
Kill and eat other animals
Herbivores
Eat plants, seeds,fruits,ect.
Scavengers
Consume carcasses of other animals
Omnivores
Includes a diet of both plants and animals.
Decomposers
Feed by chemically breaking down organic matter
Detirivores
Feed on detritvous particles
Food chain
Series of steps in which organisms transfer energy by eating and being eaten
Phytoplankton
Photosynthesic algae near the surface of the ocean
Food web
Network of complex interactions formed by the feeding relationships among the various organisms in an ecosystem
Ecological pyramids
Illustration of the relative amounts of energy and matter contained within each trophic level in a given food chain or web
biogeochemical cycles
Process in which elements, chemical compounds, and other forms of matter are passed from one organism to the other and one biosphere to the other
Nutrients
Chemical substance an organism needs to stay alive
Nitrogen fixation
Process of converting nitrogen gas into nitrogen compounds that plants can absorb and use
Denitrification
Process by which bacteria convert nitrates into nitrogen gas
Biological process
Activities preformed by living organisms
Geological
Geological changes in the Earth
Physical/chemical
Ex. Lightening, clouds
Human
Human actions that affect cycles on a global school
Biosphere
All life on earth and all part of earth in which life exists.
