Chapter 3 vocab Flashcards
Part of Earth in which life exists, including land, water, and air or atmosphere
Biosphere
The study of nature’s organisms that live in those houses.
Ecology
Any living part of the enviornment with which an organism might interact.
Biotic Factors
Physical or nonliving, factor that shapes an ecosystem.
Abiotic Factors
A group of similar organisms that can breed and produce fertile offspring.
Spieces
A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area.
Population
An assemblage of different populations that live together in a defined area.
Community
All the organisms that live in a place, together with their physical environment.
Ecosystem
All the gases that surrond the earth
Atmosphere
Earth’s fresh water and salt water , including water vapor and rain in the atmosphere, water underground, and ice
Hydrosphere
All usually solid stuff like rocks, continents, and the ocean floor, deep inside the earth.
Geosphere
Average year-to-year conditions of temperature and precipitation in an area over a long period of time.
Climate
day-to-day conditions of the atmosphere including temperature, precipitation, and other factors.
Weather
Process in which certain gases trap sunlight energy in Earth’s atmosphere.
Greenhouse Effect
Group of ecosystems that share similar climate and typical organisms
Biomes
Tall Trees from a dense, leafy covering.
Canopy
In the shade below, shorter trees and vines form a layer.
Understory
A material formed from decaying leaves and other organisms.
Humus
Biome with long cold winters and a few months of warm weather; dominated by coniferous vergeens ; also called boreal forests.
Taiga
Layer of permanently frozen subsoils.
Permafrost
Sunlight region near the surface in which photosynthesis can occur.
Photic zone
Below the photic zone, rivers and swamps.
Aphotic zone
Microscopic organisms that live in aquatic enviornments, includes both phytoplankton and zooplankton.
Plankton
Ecosystem in which water either covers the soil or is present at or near the surface for at least part of the year.
