What is software? And why is it named that?
Software is the result of lumping together OS’s and applications. It’s named that to differentiate it from hardware. Also for customers to easily understand you.
What two forms do programs come in?
Applications: Such as word and web browsers
Main program called Operating System (OS): Such as linux and windows 7
What four stages does a computer function at?
input, processing, output, and storage
what is the system unit?
Usually box shaped; one that all of the other parts connect to
What is a peripheral?
Stuff that connects to the system unit
What are these; plug, port, jack, and connector?
Plug: Goes into a port
Port: part that accepts matching plug.
Jack: alternative to a port (usually used for speakers)
connector: either a port or plug, used interchangeably
What usually connects to a mini-din?
older style keyboards and mice
What is usb?
Universal Serial Bus.
three types of usb?
usb a: rectangler
usb b: small somewhat square shaped, connects to peripheral.
mini-b: Just like the b one just more smaller and different shape.
what’s hot-swappable
You can insert and remove it, without restarting the PC.
What is FireWire?
Also called IEEE 1394. has 6 wire and also 9 wire connection. moves data at very high speeds
what are DB connectors?
Also known as D-Subminature. There are male plug ones with pins and female plug ones don’t have one, and connect to ports.
The two types of RJ jacks?
RJ-11 and RJ-45
What is the most common type of audio connector?
1/8 and called a min-audio connector
What types of video connector are there?
VESA, DVI, and HDMI
