Incarnation
The Son, second person of the Trinity, takes on a real human nature.
Complementarity
Revealed in Adam and Eve, the principle of being fit or made for each other
Yahweh
Name of God revealed in the miracle of the Burning Bush
Adam
Originally created alone, his rib was used to create a “helpmate”
Second Adam
Jesus gives humanity a new start, creating a new redeemed species of humans
Communion of Saints
Everyone in heaven interceding for the souls in purgatory and the Church on earth.
Concupiscence
Tendency to sin, which remains even after baptism
Angel
Pure spiritual being that acts as a messenger from God
Abba
Aramaic word for father, but more like “dad”
Original Sin
Lack of grace into which we are born; healed by baptism
Evolution
Adaptation of the human species over time is possible, but theories of adaptation must hold that God created humanity and endowed us with a spiritual soul, in the image of God.
Image and likeness
Humanity has been created with the same attributes of God (though imperfectly)
Stewardship
We give the gift of creation back to God, transformed, in a reciprocal act to glorify him
Holiness
Spiritual perfection or purity arising from a likeness unto God
Providence
God’s work in providing what is needed for his creatures on earth, a task in which he invites our cooperation
Matter
Physical substances used in sacraments to confer grace
Guardian Angel
Immaterial person assigned by God to protect and intercede for every human being
Filiation
Our sonship with God through Jesus’ sonship
Form
Actions done in a sacrament to confer grace
Satan
Prince of the fallen angels; the tempter
Free will
Ability to choose the good to which natural reason and divine revelation calls us
Contemplative intellect
Ability to think about metaphysical realities
Selfless love
Ability to offer ourselves for the good of others
Dominion
Mission given to humanity to fill the earth and subdue it; to rule the world responsibly
Spiritual soul
Sacred quality with which humanity was created that goes beyond just our physiology
