-usually unaccompanied to a limited range of notes
-used in monasteries to sing the divine office
-catholic church considers it to be ideal to use in worship

what are traditional hymns
- religious songs that praise God
- have been used by generations of belivers
- most are accompanied by organ
-sang during mass - helps people feel more involved in worship
- have stood the testt of time
what are contemporary worship songs
- religious songs written recently
- usually accompanied by drums and guitar or modern instruments
- often more upbeat however some are reflective
-help people feel more involved in worship - some people think it is disrespectful as it is very upbeat music and can distract people from its purpose
- others think it is more accessible and appealing than traditional hymns
what is the mass setting
- the parts of the mass that are sung rather than said eg:the gloria, the sanctus
- before the 1960s music was often complex and sung by a choir but now it is more simple so the whole congregation can join in
- helps people get involved in mass and helps the mass appeal to the whole congregation
what are the acclamations
- parts of mass that highlight the praise and celebration of God
- gloria, alleluia, sanctus, mystery of faith
what is the gloria and when is it used
- a hymn to praise Gods glory and goodness
- begins with “Glory to God in the highest” luke 2
- used near the beginning of mass
- not used during lent and advent
what is the alleluia and when is it used
- a hebrew word meaning praise God
- a hymn of joy that praises God
- announces the presence of christ
- used to introduce the gospel to greet the presence of christ
- sung 3 times at easter vigil to announce the ressurection
- not used during lent
what is the sanctus and when is it used
- latin word meaning holy
- a hymn to praise gods holyness
- used before the Eucharistic prayer
- not used during lent and advent
what is the mystery of faith and when is it used
- an acknowledgment that the whole saving of christs life death and resserection has been made present through the consecration
-used after the consecration

- there is only one God
- since we know there are three persons we learn they are all united to form one God

the love between the father and son flows as the holy spirit
this love flows outwards into the lives of people and belivers as grace
this inspires them to show this love to others
what are mission and evangelism
mission
-sending out people to help others
-help people in poverty by providing education
- they belive they should love just like God loves them
evangelism
- preaching the good news about Jesus to other people
-inspired by the holy spirit

this means the son came from the father to save humanity

a preist called arius said that only the father was eterna and not the son
the counicil confirmed the son is eternally begotten from the father
the father and son have always coexisted together
they are equal and of the same nature

disputes about the nature of the trinity
the council confirmed that the holy spirit is the third person of the trinity and fully god
jesus is both fully human and fully god
what is the symbolism of baptism
going down into the water represents joining jesus in the tomb and then emmerging to egin a new life as a christian
this symbolises joining with jesus death and therefore his ressurection
the water also represents the holy spirit which was also present at jesus baptism
why is baptism important
cleanses a person of their original sin
fills the person with the holy spirit to avoid evil
what is prayer
a conversation between peopla and god
raising the heart and mind to god
the highest form of prayer is jesus offering himself up on the cross
what are traditional and spontaneus prayer
traditional
-prayers with set words passed down over generations
-dont eed to worry about finding the right words
- familiar words can be comforting
sponateous
- made up on the spot
-inspired by the holy spirit
- more sincere as it is personal
- helps develop an individual relationship with God
- comes from the heart

-lying downwith head on ground
- sighn of total humility and submission to God
-shows the person has given themself up to God
standing with arms raised up
-sign of praise for Gods greatness and Glory
- focuses on god above in heaven
-person is totaly open to God

-shows they want god to be with them in every step of the way

-a request for help from God
