Chapter 3- the cell Flashcards
What are the 3 parts of an Animal Cell?
Nucleus
Cell membrane
Cytoplasm
What are all organisms made of?
Cells
What are the 6 parts of a plant cell?
The nucleus Cytoplasm Cell membrane Chloroplast (depends) Vacuole Cell wall
What are the differences between an animal cell and a plant cell?
Plant cells have vacuoles, a cell wall and chloroplast
Where animal cells do not.
What is a microscope used for?
A microscope is used for magnifying objects that cannot be seen under the naked eye
Name the parts of the microscope
Eyepiece lens Coarse focus wheel Fine focus wheel Nosepiece Objective lenses Stage Mirror/light source [Iris lever]
Explain how to prepare a slide of plant tissue (onion skin)
- Use the forceps (tweezers) to take a layer of skin from the onion.
- place your onion skin on a glass slide.
- Drop a few drops of iodine or methylene blue to dye the onion skin to make it easier to see under the microscope.
- put your cover slip on to the glass slide with your onion skin and gently put pressure on the cover slip to get rid of any air holes.
[5. Put slide under microscope.
6. Examine under microscope]
What is the function of an eyepiece lens?
Magnifies the object (usually x10)
What is the function of a coarse focus wheel? And a fine focus wheel?
Coarse focus wheel:
Brings object into ‘rough’ focus.
Fine focus wheel:
Bring object into ‘sharp’ focus.
What is the function of the objective lenses?
Magnifies the object by different amounts.
x4, x10, x40
What is the function of the nosepiece?
Holds the objective lenses.
What is the function of the stage?
Holds the slide
What is the function of the mirror/light source?
The source of light
*What is an organ made of?
An organ is made of many different tissues working together (e.g the heart)
What is a system?
A system is a group of organs working together (e.g the circulatory system or the digestive system)
///NOTE:\\
Cells -> Tissues -> Organs -> Systems -> Whole Organism.
{Growth results from cell division.}
Which part of a cell controls the activity of a cell?
The nucleus
Which part of a cell controls what gets in and out of the cell?
Cell membrane
What is the function of the cytoplasm of a cell?
Where chemical reactions necessary in life take place.
Where in the cell would you find DNA?
the nucleus
What are the missing words from the sentence?
An organ is made of different ….. working ….
An organ is made of different TISSUES working TOGETHER.
Two animal organs are the …. and the ….
Two animal organs are the HEART and the LIVER.
A …. is a group of organs …. together.
A SYSTEM is a group of organs WORKING together.
What causes living things to grow in size?
Cells dividing
An example of a plant tissue is …. And an example of an animal tissue is ….
An example of plant tissue is GROWTH TISSUE and an example of an animal tissue is MUSCLE TISSUE.
