Chapter 3: Survey Methods Flashcards
surface survey
process of surveying a site
typically with non-destructive remote sensing devices
subsurface detection
variety of remote sensing techniques operating at ground level
includes invasive and non-invasive techniques
remote sensing
imaging of phenomena from a distance, mainly through airborne or satellite imaging
see glossary entry for more info
ground reconnaissance
variety of methods for indentifying individual archaeological sites
includes consultation of documentary sources, place-name evidence, folklore, legend, but mainly fieldwork
reconnaissance/aerial survey
identifying archaeological sites from air/space
cultural resource management (CRM) laws
legislation that safeguards archaeological heritage via protecting sites and salvage/rescue archaeology
systematic survey
survey via grid: the survey area is divided into sectors that are walked symmetrically, making the findings more accurate
diagnostic
- artifact or other aspect of a site known to be associated with a paritcular time period/culture
- let archaeologists identify the relatively specific time periods in which the artifact/aspect was created
