Definition of Supervising
Anyone is who is responsible for the activities of one or more subordinate employees. NFPA 1021. Includes the process of direct over seeing and controlling the activities of other individuals and is basic to success in completing duties
Management
Refers to the administrating and control of projects, programs, situations or organizations.
Leading
Act of controlling, directing, conducting, guiding and administering through use of personality characteristics that motivate employees to successful completion of department goals.
Following
Act of being a team player while working toward a common goal.

Establishing priorities
Based primarily on the mission statement of the organization. Helps create focus, time mng, positive attitude, less stress.

Communicating these goals is important. Use group meetings, task sheets, graphs, time lines. Give periodic feedback.
Supervisors can involve employees in the process of establishing goals in one of three methods
- Require them to perform task.(emergency situation)
- Delegate tasks
- Democratic leadership principles. Gets everyone involved in the decision making process.

Workgroups-groupings of people with purpose of completing specific objectives
Team building-Process of building a team and overcoming inherent individual differences. Must think in terms of the group as a whole.

FORMING- uncertainty, lack of trust. Critical phase in team building. Leadership style is directive, training and information on diversity must be given.
STORMING-conflict as members jockey for position. The most critical aspect of successful team building development is to reduce the amount of time spent in this phase.
NORMING-establishes its own set of norms. closer and cohesive. norms must be appropriate.
PERFORMING-True team. CO must monitor to make sure everyone is playing nicely, no bad behaviors start and everyone is treated as equals.
ADJOURNING-Acknowledgement of achievements, debrief and decided if changes in process needed.
Basic principles of team building
- where each person fits, expectations of them and leader
- Frequent planned meetings. Updates, problems, progress
- Work with individual members. goals and obj.
- Encourage members to make suggestions, brain storm.
- Openness, honesty, trust respect
- Establish measurements of success.
- Team diversity combats group think. Take advantage of the individual talents of each member.
- Sensitivity towards each members background, outside influences. Help them to over come this.
