Chapter 3: Stoichiometry Flashcards
Combustion Reaction
a compound reacts with an oxidizing element, such as oxygen or fluorine, and the products are compounds of each element in the fuel with the oxidizing element. For example:
CH4(g) + 2O2(g) → CO2(g) + 2H2O(g)
Decomposition Reaction (Cleavage Reaction)
The separation of a chemical compound into elements or simpler compounds. For example:
NH3(g) → N2(g) + H2(g)
Condensation Reaction (Combination)
A chemical reaction in which two molecules or moieties (functional groups) combine to form a larger molecule, together with the loss of a small molecule
Example:
A+B → AB
Exchange Reaction (Displacement)
AB+C → AC+B
or
AB+CD → AD+CB
Acid-Base (Neutralization)
Involves the transfer of H+ ions
Oxidation-reduction (Redox)
Reactions involve changes in oxidation states
Example:
H2 + F2 → 2 HF
