System software
Any program created from the operation, maintenance, and security of a computer.
Operating system
Software that manages the flow of data between hardware components and allows the user to communicate with the computer.
Boot process
The start-up process of a computer, which includes loading the operating system from the disk.
Compatible
The condition whereby two computers can use the same software because the fun the same operating system.
Graphical user interface (GUI)
A type of operating system interface that allows users to communicate with the computer via graphical elements on the screen.
Command-line interface
A way to interact with computers that requires users to memorize and type a series of commands.
Multitasking
The ability to run multiple programs at the same time.
Device drivers
Programs that allow operating systems to communicate with hardware.
Open source
A type of software license that permits the source code to be freely distributed and modified.
Start screen
The new default screen in windows 8, it can run mobile-style apps and display live titles that show real-time information.
Desktop
The traditional starting area in GUI-based operating systems
Live titles
A graphic element in the Windows 8 Start screen that can display real-time information such as the current weather, news, or social media updates
Widgets
A small screen element that provides automatically updating information without the need to open an app.
Application Software
Software that allows individuals to complete a variety of work and school-related tasks. Entertainment software and most mobile apps are also in this category.
Security software
Programs that help keep you , your computer, and your personal information safe from a variety of threats.
Security suite
A bundle of programs that accomplish a variety of security-related tasks
Malware
A generic term to describe various kinds of malicious programs created to harm a computer or steal valuable information.
Firewall
A software utility dedicated to examining and blocking Internet traffic.
Encryption
The process of scrambling your data or storage devices to make them unreadable by anyone who doesn’t have the proper key.
Parental control
Utilities that allow parents to set a variety of limits on their children’s internet usage
Virtual machine
A special environment that allows users to run an operating system in top of another operating system.
Virtualization software
The software that allows you to run a virtual machine.
Formatting
The process of preparing a storage device for use by an operating system.
Partitioning
Dividing a hard drive into multiple sections
File system
The way in which the operating system views and manages the space in a storage device.
Disk defragmentation
An optimization utility hat will reorganize dukes and fragments to place related ones nearer to each other
Disk cleanup
A utility that clears out temporary files that take up space in your hard drive
File compression
The process of making a file smaller than its original size
Backup
A copy of one or more files that is made in case the originals become lost or damaged.
Cloud backup
Utility software that creates automated backups to an online account
File hierarchy
The way a computer organizes files, consisting of drives, folders and files
Drives
A computers storage devices
Folders
A container that can store files or other folders. Also known as a directory.
Files
The most fundamental component of storage that users interact with. A file can contain the instructions of a computer program or the data that you care to store.
Root directory
The location on a drive that is outside of any folders or directories
Path
A complete address that describes the exact location of a file
Icon
A graphical representation of a file, folder, or drive.
File extension
A short, unique sequence of characters located after a file’s name that indicates the file type.
Clipboard
A temporary holding space in the computers memory for data that is being copied or moved.
Copy
A command that places a copy of the selected object into the clipboard
Cut
A command that removes the selected object from their current location and places them into the clipboard
Paste
A command that places the content of the clipboard into the location where this command is issued.
Delete
A command that removes a file from your drive.
Installed
The process of having software set up by the operating system so that it can be used.
Software license
A contract from the software creator that specifies the rules for using this software.
Copyright law
A federal law that gives software creators a variety of rights and privileges over their creative work
End-user license agreement (EULA)
The typical license that a user must agree to before installing software.
Volume license
License that allows companies to install software on multiple machines.
Subscription model
A payment method for software that has users pay a fixed amount of money per month in order to use the software
Shareware
Software that is free to download and install, but will stop working after a trail period unless the user purchases the software
Freeware
Any software that is free to use without any specified time restrictions.
Web-based applications
A program that runs directly on your web browser
Office suite
A bundle of programs that help businesses efficiently carry out tasks such as writing letters, analyzing sales figures and scheduling meetings
Word processing software
Software that provides tools for creating, editing, and formatting all kinds of text-based documents
Spreadsheet software
Software used for entering, calculating, and analyzing sets of numbers. This software is also used for creating charts
Database
An organized method for storing information
Database management system (DBMS)
Software that allows users to create and manage complex databases.
Presentation software
A category of software that enables users to create electronic slideshows that are used to present information
Personal information manager (PIM)
Software that is designed to keep individuals organized via the management of contacts, appointments, to do lists, and email.
Media players
An application that allows you to listen to music and play videos
Bitmap graphics
A type of image that is represented by individual pixels
Vector graphics
A type of image that relies on mathematics which allows users to increase or decrease the size of the image without any distortion
