Socialization
Lifelong social experience by which people develop their human potential and learn culture
An active process that occurs through interaction with others
Primary Socialization
The groups we first socialize with as children and have a major impact on early life
Secondary Socialization
Socialization after childhood (romantic relationship, peers, workplace)
Determinism versus Agency
Determinism- we have been formed by an outside force
Agency- the ability to exercise free will when making life decisions
Nature
The belief that social actions and interaction are largely determined by our biological makeup
Nurture
The belief that human interaction is largely influenced by our social environment

Our development of self is a reflection of our perception of who others think we are
George Herbert Mead
People act certain ways around us because of how they perceive us, and we perceive that reflection and reflect is back
The I- our subjective view of ourselves
The Me- the way we act because of our views
Taking on the Role of the Other
Our ability to incorporate other people's perception and interaction based on what others expect 3 Stages Imitate Play Game
The generalized other
We know that people in our culture will act in a certain way
Agents of Socialization
Family- aids in creation of of self awareness and values
School/Peers- get exposed to different values and get to choose who you interact with
Mass Media- most one directional socialization
Gender Socialization
Boys- expected to play more aggressively
Girls- expected to be better behaved
Boys and girls are directed toward different career roles
Resocialization
Changing someone’s personality by carefully controlling the environment
Involves stripping away past beliefs, values, and behaviour and instilling new ones
Total Institution
A settling where people are isolated from the rest of society and controlled by an administrative staff
Socialization and the life course; childhood
High income nations believe childhood is a time of learning and play
Low income nations believe children can work to earn money like the adults
Hurried child syndrome- when children “grow up too fast”
Socialization and the life course: adolescence
A time of social contradictions, where you are not a child but not an adult
S&LC- Adulthood
Early adulthood- juggling many things, new jobs, families, etc
Middle adulthood- realizing fragility of health, change in family dynamics as children grow, and realizing goals may never be achieved
Old Age
Biology- health decreases
Culture- retirement, becoming less independent
Income- living on pension
