developd the Looking glass self based on the interest of how ewe develop a sense of self
The Looking Glass Self
suggests that the gestures and reactions of others are a mirror in which we see ourselves, and explains why we can’t learn about ourselves in isolation. We often modify our behaviour because we are aware of others around us interpreting our actions, and we are concerned about how others are applying negative judgements based on associations with the way they see us.
Mead
developed the theory of informed symbolic interactionism or ‘taking the role of the other’
Taking the Role of the Other (informed symbolic interactionism)
involves anticipating in advance how others will see and react to you. The ability to interpret or understand another person’s perspective.
Stages of informed symbolic interactionism

Imitative Stage of ISI
children 2 or under. Kids don’t know how to take the role of the other and are learning to recognize others as separate beings
Play Stage of ISI
learning how to take the roles of other people – learning to imagine how others are responding to them. However, they cant contextualize themselves: they cant completely understand what position they fit into in relation to the larger group (think of 3 year olds playing soccer)
