Chapter 3 - Scientific Meathod Flashcards
Observe something —> formulate a hypothesis—> test through empirical research —> draw conclusions —> evaluate conclusions
Scientific method for psychology
Objective description of how a variable is going to be measured and observed in a particular way
Operational definition
“Crunching” data numbers mathematically to see if they support predictions
Data analysis
People are likely to feel fulfilled when their lives meet important needs, relatedness, autonomy, and completeness
Self-determination theory
Finding out about basic dimensions of a variable
Ex: how people with different income levels react to the new apple iPhone
Descriptive research
Discovering relationships between variables
Correlational research
Establishes causal relationships between variables
Ex: laboratory experiments or cause and effect relationships
Experimental research
Variables has not been measured accounts for the relationships between two other variables (confounds)
Ex: number of fire hydrants in a city and the number of dogs in a city
Third variable problem
Systematic observation, used by correlational researchers, that involves obtaining measures of variables of interest in multiple waves over time
Ex: differences between identical twins who are brought up together vs those who were not
Longitudinal design
