-a group of representatives elected by the people in an area
-were a part of representative governments

-Britain’s lawmaking body
Intolerable Acts
-acts of the British government that broke the “final straw” of colonists
-when Britain closed off Boston’s ports, restricting all trade
-some southern colonies sent food to Boston because the ports were blocked off
Boston Tea Party
-when the Sons of Liberty boarded a British ship with tea and dumped it into the Boston Harbor
-The Sons of Liberty dressed as Native Americans
Daughters of Liberty
-helped make fabic for clothing since the ports were closed off
-made and found other items that were being boycotted
Common Sense
-pamphlet written by Thomas Paine
-explained how the colonists should be free from the rule of Great Britain in simple terms
Declaration of Independence
-“Greatest breakup letter of all time”
-stated that America was a free and independent country form Britain
Battle of Bunker Hill
-The Americans were forced to retreat
-British suffered 1,054 casualties
-Americans only suffered 411 casualties
Ohio River Valley
-French and British were fighting over this land in the French and Indian War
-land along the Ohio River that was wanted for settling or as a trade post

-an economic theory around the ideas of a balance of trade and using metals as currency

-Only representative government in the colonies

-Consisted of elected officials
Direct Democracy
-A government where all citiznes create laws
-there are no elected representatives
Stamp Act
-a law passed by Parliament that imposed a tax on all paper goods bought and sold in the colonies
Townshend Acts
-the law created by Charles Townshend that imposed a tax on imported goods like glas, lead, paper, paint, and tea
Sons of Liberty
-A group of Patriots that started out as 9 in Boston
-was created to protest the British laws and Acts
Boston Massacre
-Started when angry colonists started throwing things like rocks at Bitish Soldiers
-first person shot was Crispus Attucks
First Continental Congress
-one delegate from each colony except for Gerogia came together to create a response to the Intolerable Acts
Articles of Confederation
-gave more power to the colonies themselves than the federal government
-created to prevent the federal governemnt from turning into what they just freed themselves from
Yorktown
-In Virginia
-British were on a peninsula
-Americans surrounded the British on all three land sides
-French Navy blocked off their access to supplis, people, food, etc.
-British ended up surrendering
Native American, African American, and women
-Native American’s tried to stay out of it
-Slaves were promised freedom if they joined the British side
-Many slaves followed their masters’ footsteps if they were kind
-Slaves went to opposing sides if they’re masters treated them pooorly
-women pretended to be men and sfought in the war
-women were also spies

-they had to establish an economy
-they were all on their own for supplies
-they had to create a government
