What is an inflected language?
Function/Syntax of words is determined by the endings given for nouns, adjectives and verbs
How many declensions do nouns/adjectives have and how do we determine it?
There are 5 declensions. They are determined by the ending of the genitive form.
How do you find the stem of a Latin noun/adjective?
Step 1: Identify its genitive form
Step 2: Take off the genitive ending
Ex: femina (nominative) , [feminae] (genitive)
Stem: femin-
What is a conjugation? How many conjugations do verbs have? How many principal parts do they have? Which ones do we care about?
A conjugation is the changing of the endings for verbs. Verbs have 4 conjugations and 4 principal parts (1st person present, present infinitive, 1st person perfect, perfect passive participle). We only care about the 1st person present, present infinitive and the perfect passive participle.
Ex: amo, amare, amatum
How do you find the stem of a Latin verb? What parts do you use?
Present infinitive stem: minus -re
Perfect passive stem: minus -um
What are deponent verbs?
Verbs that are passive in construction, but active in meaning
How to find the stems of deponent verbs?
Same as regular verbs, but the present stem of 3rd conjugation deponent verbs replaces the final -e it lost when originally forming its infinitive
Ex: sequi –> seque-
reverti –> reverte-
