Chapter 3- Probability Flashcards
Sample space
The set of all possible outcomes
Event
Any set of outcomes of interest
Probability
The probability of an event is the relative frequency of this set of outcomes over an indefinitely large number of trials. In real life, probabilities just have to be obtained from large samples
Complement
The probability that an event will not occur
Positive predictive value
The probability that a person has a disease, given that the test is positive
Negative predictive value
The probability that a person does not have a disease given that the test is negative
Sensitivity
The probability that the symptom is present given that the person has a disease
Specificity
The probability that the symptom is not present given that the person does not have a disease
