Chapter 3: Pressure Flashcards
Pressure, Density, Liquid Pressure, Hydraulics, Gas Pressure, Barometer/Manometer
What is pressure?
Force acting per unit area (P = F / A)
What is the SI unit for pressure?
Pascal (Pa) which is N / m^2
What is density?
Mass per unit volume
What factors affect density?
Temperature - Inveresly related
Pressure - Linearlly related
How does temperature affect density?
As temperature increases, kinetic energy increases. Particles move further away from each other, causing density to decrease
How is liquid pressure calculated?
pressure = vertical height of liquid column x density of liquid x gravity
What counts as a fluid
Liquids and gases
What does hydraulics do?
Ampifies or magnifies a force
How is the force and area of a surface in a hydraulic press related?
Force of smaller surface x surface area of smaller surface = Force of bigger surface x surface area of bigger surface
What does a barometer do?
Measues atmospheric pressure
What does a manometer do?
Measures the difference in pressure in fluids
