What is Disease?
Abnormally functioning organs or organ systems taking away from Homeostasis.
What is Pathology?
The study of disease.
What is Malaise?
Feeling of general discomfort.
What is Predisposing Factor?
Something that makes you more likely to get a disease.
What are the predisposing factors that are NOT controlled?
Age, gender, heredity
What are the predisposing factors that ARE controlled?
Lifestyle & environment.
Why are the elderly more susceptible to disease?
Their organ systems are less efficient.
Why are children more susceptible to disease?
Partially developed immune systems.
What are the 3 classifications of disease for children?
Congenital disorders (present @ birth), Genetic disorders (inherited genes) & Developmental disorders (may interrupt normal development)
Why is Gender a predisposing factor?
Some diseases affect only males or only females due to differences in anatomy. (Prostate vs Uterin Cancers)
What is Heredity?
Combination of the genetic codes from both parents.
What are some examples of a Lifestyle Factor?
Smoking, diet
What are some examples of an Environment Factor?
Polluted air/water, chronic stress, poor & unsanitary conditions, contaminated food.
What is a Symptom?
Subjective. As told by the patient. (Headache, nausea)
What is a Sign?
Objective signal. Can be seen or tested. (Rash, fever)
