Chapter 3: Particle model of matter Flashcards

1
Q

What is specific latent heat?

A

The amount of energy required for 1kg of a substance to change state. The energy required to change the state of 1kg of a substance with no change in temperature. E = mL

Q

What is the particle model of gases?

A

A theory explaining the behaviour of gases which explains that:

  • Particles in a gas are in a constant state of random motion
  • Particles in a gas collide with each other and the walls of their container without losing any kinetic energy
  • As the kinetic energy of the molecules increases, the temperature of the gas increases
  • The temperature of the gas is related to the average kinetic energy of all the particles
