Chapter 3, page 119 to end Flashcards
OEM heat sink and fan assemblies are made by off brand manufacturers and are not to be trusted. T or F
False. OEM stands for Original equipment manufacturers and you will know absolutely that they will work.
Third party heat sink and fan assemblies usually have one advantage. What is it?
They usually exceed the OEM heat sinks in amount of heat they dissipate.
What is the advantage of liquid cooling a PC?
None. They are expensive, require extra hardware, and do about the same job as a heat sink and fan.
What is fanless cooling? Is it an advantage or disadvantage for desktops? For laptops?
Fanless cooling describes a system with no special fan on the heat sink. If the desktop does not have adequate case fans, it could cause the CPU to overheat. For laptops, many do not have space for a heatsink-fan assembly and must count on the case fan to do the job. (is this correct?)
How much thermal paste should be applied to the top of the CPU?
a small drop, spread very thinly and evenly on the case of the CPU
Thermal paste can be applied thickly on the CPU case, it doesn’t matter. T or F
False. Too much can cause overheating and cause the CPU to be intermittent or fail.
What program on modern systems does the computer use to set the motherboard speed, multiplier, and voltage?
CPUID
In older systems, what methods were used to set motherboard speed, multiplier, and voltage?
moving a jumper, changing a CMOS setting, or using software
How do you access the system setup utility?
while the computer is starting up, press any key. Some computers require the DELETE key to be pressed. If the Windows startup screen starts, you are too late.
What are the disadvantages of overclocking?
it immediately voids any warrenties on the CPU, can make the CPU unstable and prone to lockups, reboots and shutdowns, and may fry the CPU
Intel and AMD, although do not encourage overclocking, have programs to do so. What are they?
Intel - Intel Extreme Tuning Utility (Intel XTU)
AMD - AMD Overdrive Utility
Several other adjustments need to be made if overclocking. What are they?
Using jumpers, CMOS or software, increase bus speed for the system.
Second, to provide stability, you need to slightly increase voltage going to the CPU
What button on the motherboard can help return the system to working status if changes were made to the CMOS?
CMOS clear, or CLRTC
What two issues cause the majority of CPU failures?
faulty installation and overheating.
What three problems can show up as an installation CPU failure?
too much thermal paste, not enough thermal paste, or failure to connect the fan power to the motherboard
