Chapter 3- Nerve Cells And Nerve Impulses Flashcards
What is the nervous system?
The body system involved with control and coordination of the body.
What is the central nervous system (CNS)?
The part of the nervous system that consists of the brain and spinal cord.
What is the peripheral nervous system (PNS)?
The part of the nervous system that connects the central nervous system with receptors, muscles and glands.
What is a neuron?
A nerve cell; the basic structural and functional unit of the nervous system.
What is an interneuron?
A nerve cell in the brain or spinal cord that carries messages in between other nerve cells; also called association neurons or connector neurons.
What is a cell body?
The part of a neuron that contains the nucleus.
What are dendrites?
Extensions of the nerve cell body; carries nerve impulses into the cell body.
