Chapter 3: Men's bodies Flashcards
What makes up men’s external genitalia?
Penis and Scrotum
What are genital end-bulbs?
Specialized nerve endings found in the genital area
that probably detect the tactile stimulation associated with sexual activity.
Explain the relationship between the sinusoids and an erection
sinusoids. These spaces are part of the circulatory system; that is, blood enters them from arteries and exits by way of veins. When the penis is in a flaccid state, the arteries are in a constricted state, so little blood can flow into the sinusoids. Erection occurs when neural signals cause the arter- ies of the penis to open more widely, allowing blood to flow freely into the corpora cavernosa. The resulting expansion of the corpora cavernosa compresses and closes the veins that exit from the erectile tissue, thus preventing blood from leaving the penis. As sexual climax approaches, vasocongestion causes further swelling of the penis, especially the glans, and the pooling of blood within the glans turns it a purplish color.
