Chapter 3 Matter Properties & Changes Flashcards
What are the characteristics for physical change?
Density, color, order, taste, sight
Physical property
Characteristics that can be observed or measured without changing the sample’s composition
Extensive properties
Dependent upon the amount of substance present
Intensive properties
Independent of the amount of substance present
Chemical property
The ability of a substance to combine with or change into one or more other substances
What are three states of matter?
Solid, liquid, and gas
States of matter
All matter that exists on earth can be classified as one of these physical forms
Examples of solids?
Wood, iron, paper, and sugar
How do you know it’s a solid?
If the shape is definite, a solid may not conform to the shape of the container in which it is placed
What is a liquid?
Form of matter that flows, has constant volume; and takes the shape of its container
Examples of liquid?
Water, blood, Mercury
What can liquid do?
Move past each other
What is gas?
A form of matter that flows to conform to the shape of its container and fills the entire volume of its container
examples of gases?
Neon, methane, air
Physical change
A substance without changing its composition
