chapter 3 main ideas Flashcards
what are the 3 central tendencies?
mean: average, median: middle position of all the scores, mode: most frequent score
sample mean symbol vs population mean
M= sample
μ= population
Why not use the mode more with quantitative data?
You are essentially ignoring a lot of useful information (all of the data other than the mode). Not ideal.
good reasons to use mode or median
1.) Non-normal data (e.g. skewed data)
2.) Nominal/ qualitative data
3.) Ordinal data
otherwise always use mean
positively skewed
majority of scores are lower and a few large scores are at the tail
if the data is evenly distributed the mean mode and median will be
equal
in a positively skewed example what is the order of mean median and mode?
mode, median, mean
In a negatively skewed example what is the order of mean median and mode?
mean, median, mode (alphabetical order)
ways to graph means
bar and line graphs
