Viceroy
someone sent by a king or queen to rule a colony
Encomienda
a system granted from the Spain government that gives Spanish settlers the right to take land and control local American Indian on that land

a method of ranking people often by race, power, or wealth

a person who is sent to another country to convince others to believe in a particular religion
Treaty
an agreement usually between two nations
New Spain
the land claimed in North and south America for Spain

Who came up with the Treaty of Tordesillas which split in the land between them?
Portugal and Spain
Did other countries agree with the Treaty of Tordesillas?
No, they did not. They came took land anyway.
Who ruled Spain in 1519?
King Charles V
Why did King Charles send a viceroy to take Cortes’s place?
Because he didn’t trust him
What is a viceroy’s job?
- collectin money for the royal treasury
- selecting other officials
- enforcing the law
- converting American Indians to Christianity
Why did the king set up the encomienda?
So Spain could take over the Indian’s land and make American Indians work for them, in return they had to protect them and teach them about Christianity (Often, they just took the land and didn’t protect them.)
What was the class structure in New Spain?
Peninsular: A Spaniard born in New Spain
Crillo/crilla: Someone born in New Spain to Spanish parents
Mestizos: Of mixed Spanish and American Indians background
