Chapter 3: Introduction to Metabolism Flashcards
Unit 2: Metabolic Processes
Oxidation
LEO the lion says GER
Oxidation is the loss of electrons (LEO: Lose Electrons Oxidation)
reduction
LEO the lion says GER
reduction is the gain of electrons (GER: Gain Electrons Reduction)
Endothermic vs. exothermic reaction
These describe heat changes in a reaction.
1. Endothermic:
* The reaction absorbs heat.
* Feels cold.
Example: Melting ice, cooking food.
2. Exothermic:
* The reaction releases heat.
* Feels hot.
Example: Fire burning, freezing water.
endergonic vs. exergonic reaction
These describe energy changes in a reaction.
1. Endergonic:
* The reaction needs energy to happen.
Example: Building molecules, like in photosynthesis.
2. Exergonic:
* The reaction releases energy as it happens.
Example: Breaking down food, like in digestion.
