UCR (uniform crime report)
Data that the FBI collects annually from 17,000 local, federal, and state law enforcement.
What does the UCR data provide?
it provides data on 1. crimes known to the police, 2. crimes cleared by arrest, 3. persons arrested, and 4. numbers and employment of law enforcement personal.
Part 1 offenses
crimes known to the police (index crimes) the most serious crimes. homicide, rape, robbery, AA, crime against property.
Part two offenses
less serious crimes. simple assault and crimes without a victim.
Crimes known to the police
theses crimes are reported, seen or called in to the police or any law enforcement.
Crimes cleared by arrest
crimes are cleared when crimes are cleared by arrest or when the suspect is known but not arrested.
Problems with the UCR
most serious white collar crimes go unseen and unreported. its also bias.
Hierarchy rule
arrest statistics are recored according to the hierarchy rule. if more than one offense id reported in the part one offense, then only one that was serious is reported.
National incident base reporting system. (NIBRS)
a revision of the UCR which reports each crime called in. no hierarchy rule.
National crime victimization survey (NCVS)
a comprehensive survey of crime victimization within the USA
What type of information is the NCVS trying to elicit?
info about the victim; age, sex, ethnicity. the offender; sex, age, race, etc. the offender; offense, time, place.
The NCVS suffers…
the same bias as the UCR white collar crime is not reported.
Self report survey
a survey that sociologist developed to revile what offenders hide in NCVS survey.
Career criminals
repetitive criminals make up most of the percentage.
Cohort
A group of individuals with the similar problem ad repeat offenders.
