Chapter 3 - Forces and Motion Flashcards
what is a force?
the action of one body on a second body; unbalanced forces cause changes in speed, shape or direction
what is air resistance?
friction acting on an object moving through air
what is friction?
the force that acts when two surfaces rub over one another
what is drag?
friction that acts on an object as it moves through a fluid (liquid or gas)
what is solid friction?
the resistance to motion caused when two surfaces are in contact
what is resultant force?
the single force that has the same effect on a body as two or more forces
what is gravity?
the force that exists between any two objects with mass
what is acceleration of free fall/acceleration due to gravity?
the acceleration of an object falling freely under gravity
what is gravitational field strength?
the gravitational force exerted per unit mass placed at the point
what is terminal velocity?
the greatest speed reached by an object when moving through a fluid
what is impulse?
the change in an objects momentum or the force of an object multiplied by the time for which the force acts
what is momentum?
the product of mass and velocity
what is collision?
the meeting of particles or of bodies in which each exerts a force upon the other
what is the principle of the conservation of momentum?
the total momentum is constant and does not change because of an interaction between bodies (such as collisions)
what is a vector triangle?
a graphical representation of vectors in two dimensions so that the resultant vector can be calculated
