Chapter 3 Flashcards
What does Central Tendency mean?
A score representing average of data
- Centre of data set
- A single number indicating where many scores lie
What three measures fall under central tendency?
- Mean
- Median
- Mode
What is mean?
Average; calculated by adding up all the scores and dividing by the number of scores in total
Note: Highly susceptible to extreme values
The mean of a population is symobolized by what?
The greek letter “mu”; it is a parameter
Remember: A parameter represents the average of an entire population
What is median? How would you calculate the location of median?
Midpoint in the given observations; L= n+1/2
Example: 11,12,13,14,15 ==> 5+1/2 = 3 ==> 3 is 13 therefore 13 is the median
What is Mode? Give an example
Mode is the value that occurs most often; only good for categorical data or large interval/ratio data
- Example: 1,7,5,9,8,7 ==> 7 is the most frequent number ==> Mode = 7
