Chapter 3 Female sexualy anatomy and physiology Flashcards
Vulva
The external genitals of the female, including the pubic hair, mons veneris, labia mahora, clitoris, and urinary and vaginal openings
Vagina
an internal structure with only the opening a part of the vulva
What is the purpose of hair one the mons?
During sexual arousal the sent that accopanies secretions is held by the pubic hair and can add to sensory erotic pleasure,
public hair also prevents uncomfortable friction and provides cushioning during intercourse
gynecology
the medical practice specializing in women’s health and in diseases of the female reproductive and sexual organs
labia majora
the outer lips of the vulva
labia minora
the inner lips of the vulva, one on each side of the vaginal opening
prepuce
clitoral hood
the foreskin or fold of skin over the clitors
Forms of genital altertion
piercing and wearing jewelry on the vulva, clitoral hood and the labia minora or majora. rings and/or barbells are placed through the piercings.
cosmetic surgery to alterthe size or shape of their labia minora(labiaplasty) to make their labia smaller or more symmetrical.
clitoris
a highly sensitive structure of the female external genitals, the only function of which is sexual pleasure
glans
the head of the clitoris, which is richly endowed with nerve endings
shaft
the length of the clitors bwtween the glans and the body
crura
the innermost tips of the caernous bodies that connect to the pubic bones
vestibule
the area of the vulva inside the labis minora
urethra
the tube through which urine passes from the bladder
introitus
the opening to the vagina
hymen
tissue that partially covers the vaginal opening
perineum
the area between the vagina and the anus of the female and the scrotum and anus of the male
cavernous bodies
the structures in the shaft of the clitoris the engore with blood during sexual arousal
vestibular bulbs
two bulbs, one on each side of the vaginal opening, the engorge with blood during sexual arousal
Bartholin’s glands
two small glands slightly inside the vaginal opening that secrete a few drops of fluid during sexual arousal
the pelvic floor muscles
have a multudirectional design that allows the vaginal opening to expand greatly during childbirth and to contract afterward
kegal exericses
a series of exercies that strengthen the muscles undderlying the external feamle or male genitals
mucosa
collective term fro the mucous membranes; moist tissue that lines certain body area such as the penile urethra, vagina and mouth
rugae
the folds of the tissue in the vagina
Grafenberg spot(g-spot)
glands and ducts in the anterior wall of the vagina, some women experience sexual pleasure , arousal, orgasm, andan eja ulation of fluids from stimulation of the grafenberg spot
vasocongestion
the engorgement of blood vessels in particular body parts in response to sexual aroual
What perpose does vaginal lubrication serve
it enhanes the possibility of conceptionby helping by alkalinize the normally acidic vaginal chemical balance (vaginal pH level changes from 4.5 to 6.0-6.5 with sexual arousal).sperm travel faster and survive longer in al alkaline enviorment than in an acidic one.
increase sexua; enjoyment
douching
rinsing out the vagina with plain water or a variety of solutions, it is usually unnecessary for hygiene, and douching to often can result in vaginal irritation.
cervix
the small end of the uterus, located at the back of he vagina
os
the opening in the cervix that leads to the interior of the uterus
uterus
the pear shaped organ inside theremale pelvis, within which the fetus develops
What three layers make up the walls of the uterus
Perimetrium
myometrium
endometrium
perimetrium
the thin membrane covering the outside of the uterus
myometrium
the smooth muscle layer of the uterine wall
made of longitudinal and circulat muscle fibers that interwave like the fibers of a basket; this enables the uterus to streach during pregnancy and contract during labor and organsm
at the top of the uterus,an area called the fundus, the uterine walls are especially thick
endometrium
the tissue that lines the inside of the uterine walls
rich in blood vessels, the endometrium nourishes the zygote ,which travels downthe uterus from the fallopian tubes after fertiliazation
fallopian tube
two tubes , extending from the sides of the uterus, inwhich the egg and sperm travel
fimbriae
fringelike ends of the fallopican tubes, into which the released ovum enters(hover over the ovary)
ectopic pregnancy
a pregnancy that occurs when a fertilized ovem implants outside the uterus, most commonly in a fallopian tube
ovaries
remale gonads that produce ova and sex hormones
ovulation
the release of a maature ovum from the ovary
menstruation
the sloughing off of the built up uterine lining that takes place if conception has not occured
menarche
the initial onset of menstural periods in a young women
