Chapter 3 | Experimental and Sampling Design Flashcards
What is a simple random sample?
a random sample is pulled from one main population
What is a Stratified random sample
the population is divided into groups of similar individuals (strata), a random sample is selected from each strata and the results are compared
What is a multistage sample?
A large population is broken down into smaller groups. Groups are randomly selected and then individuals are selected randomly from them.
What is a capture-recapture sample?
its a catch and release. overall population is estimated, a random sample is pulled, tagged and released. Then a random sample is collected again and the number tagged is counted.
What is the capture-recapture equation?
Number in original sample/Total population = number tagged in second sample/total number in second sample
What are the experimental designs
randomized block design
matched pairs
completely randomized
What are the sampling designs
anecdotal voluntary Random or probability based: -Simple random (SRS) -stratified random -capture-recapture -multistage
What are the biases
undercoverage
nonresponse
response bias
what is undercoverage bias
some groups in the population are left out of the process of choosing the sample
What is nonresponse bias
an individual chosen for the sample can’t be contacted or does not cooperate
what is response bias
respondents may lie, forget, or over exaggerate details
